Mani wheels are used for spreading spiritual blessings and filled with myriad copies of prayers and mantras (in this case Om Mani Padme Hum), wound around an axle in a protective  container, and spun around and around. Prayer wheels can be handheld, found mounted in rows next to pathways, at entrances to shrines, or along the route which people use as they walk slowly around a sacred site for example stupas etc. The curvature of the wheels gives this weaving a 3 dimensional effect and great care has been taken in creating the lettering and its positioning, giving the impression of motion.
